Regional NewsAn 82' catamaran superyacht design, called the Astrolabe, is in development by Thailand-based Albatross Marine Design. The catamaran concept offers unprecedented facilities and comfort. The craft is a luxury yacht expedition style, providing unlimited cruising opportunities for the owner, or for luxury charter.

Special emphasis was placed on motion comfort based on research carried out by Albatross designers on smaller designs. With an efficient hull, the boat is capable of long range cruising (range approx. 2,000 nautical miles).

Astrolabe carries a lot of toys on board, which are essential for expedition activities and watersports. There are two tenders – one at the stern and one on the flybridge (which can also be used as a hovercraft tender). Up to two jet skis are carried in the bow compartments, fitted with their own cranes. Regional News The interior layout includes two saloons: one pilot house saloon with opportunities to socialize while underway. Another saloon has a bar area, sofas and dining space at the stern and offers a panoramic view. The spacious galley is at main deck level (some owners like to cook on board!). A separate office cabin is also provided. There are four master/guest cabins sized 3x4.2m, each designed in two levels, with the upper level on the main deck being a bedroom and the lower level (stairway down to the demihull) housing a bathroom and wardrobe. Crew accommodation is at the bow, with a separate captain's cabin.
Main particulars: length overall - 24.6m, beam – 10m, displacement full load – 81t; engines 2x1300HP; max speed – 25kts, hull material – composite. Albatross Marine Design has an extensive record of designing power catamarans and is applying all its expertise for the new superyacht project.

Regional NewsThe dates have been set for the 2014 Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX), 'Asia's favourite boat show', and will be held 9th to 12th January at Royal Phuket Marina. After two years holding the event in March, PIMEX returns to its previous timing of January. "Following feedback from the 10th anniversary show earlier this year, we have decided to return to the popular January slot after two years of being held in March," said Andy Dowden, Show Director.

"The unseasonable heat during this year's show was one of the factors for moving the date back to January, and the show's opening times are planned to be adjusted to carry through to the evening." The leading consumer boat show in Asia, PIMEX has grown to become one of the most important events in the marine calendar, hotly anticipated by marine and lifestyle businesses from around Asia and the world each year.

PIMEX plays a central role in Thailand and Asia's marine industry as a meeting place and a sales and marketing platform for marine leisure businesses. The show continues to generate sales and through a global marketing campaign raise awareness of Phuket, Thailand and beyond to an audience worldwide. The gateway to marine leisure and boating in the region, the Andaman Triangle, consisting of Phang Nga and Krabi with Phuket at is centre, is often referred to as the Monaco of the East and has become the playground of the wealthy.

The annual marine and lifestyle event, which is an integral part of Phuket's calendar and a key event on the Asian boat show circuit, will benefit from the many international visitors and villa owners spending the Christmas and New Year holidays on the Island. "The January period is peak season on Phuket, and it is a time when luxury villa owners are often in residence, enjoying the Christmas and New Year holidays," commented Dowden, adding "PIMEX will showcase the unique luxury and marine lifestyle that Phuket Island has to offer to an international audience of High Net Worth Individuals."

On display at PIMEX 2014 will be a stunning array of yachts and equipment, luxury cars and goods, and some of the finest properties on the Island, set against a backdrop of marina-side cocktail parties and VIP functions held over four days from 9th to 12th January.

Royal Phuket Marina will be the "Official Host Venue" for five years in ground-breaking agreement between marina and organizers of Phuket International Boat Show.

This is complemented by fine-dining, a patisserie, private members Health Club and shopping and fashion all situated along the boardwalk.

Talking at the recent signing, Gulu Lalvani, Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina said, "We have been the home of PIMEX since the opening of Royal Phuket Marina in 2005 and are very excited to sign a five-year Host Venue agreement and to enter this new era with the organsiers."

"We recognise the importance of PIMEX to the regional marine and lifestyle industry. It is firmly established as a key marine event in the global calendar, attracting interested buyers from all over the world each year. RPM and PIMEX have the same goals; to help promote Phuket and the marine industry and marine leisure lifestyle, and together we have helped make Phuket the undisputed cruising capital of Asia. We look forward to working closely with the organisers for the next five years and beyond."
