|Phuket Youth Sailing Week|
CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF RACING SUCCESS
Since the program started in 2008, we have trained young sailors on Phuket from complete beginners to competing at National and International Level. Our sailors have been successful in a number of regattas and even represented Thailand at the Double Star Cup, Qingdao, China, last year.
Every October the club runs a training event to prepare the sailors for the coming season and this year to celebrate and as an initiative to get more young people sailing we invite all young sailors to join Phuket Youth Week.
Phuket Youth Week offers young people the opportunity to learn to sail and hone crucial skills in the sport, including starting, finishing techniques, mark rounding, boat speed and general tactical skills essential to racing. Training will be offered through Topper Sail Phuket, RYA Training School and Thai National Coaches.
Training is open to all levels, but to get the most out of the week participants would benefit if they have already completed one of our beginner courses. The club will be running RYA beginning courses most weekends during September & October leading up to the event.
The week will finish with a 2 day Regatta with divisions for the Optimist, Topper & Topaz. Prizes will be awarded under two categories - one for beginners new to racing "Green Fleet" and one for advanced sailors "Racing Fleet" The twoday Regatta is also open to all other sailors wishing to join us.
"Sailing provides excellent life training for young people, it helps develop character and important life skills such as leadership and teamwork in a hands on environment. We would like to see more people enjoying sailing and racing," says Katy Gooch, RYA Club Coach.
Phuket Youth Week is a good introduction to sailing and racing and will give them the skills to join in other Regattas. The next big event on the Sailing Calendar is the Phuket King's Cup International Dinghy Regatta 2013.A Tale of Success
Akapoj (Tik) Kankeaw started sailing with us in 2008 when he was 12 years old. During these past five years Tik has completed in multiple National Events, coming 2nd in the Hua Hin Regatta Division B fleet in 2010 and went on to win the Phuket King's Cup International Dinghy Regatta Optimist Title in 2011 and the Topper Title in 2012. He is now training as an instructor and helping to coach the new Team of sailors.
"I love sailing, it is a part of my life now. I enjoy sailing Cats and bigger yachts but would like to continue with dinghy racing and hope to sail a 420 with my teammates" says Tik Phuket Youth Sailing Club is a nonprofit organisation; the club is a member of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT) and registered with the Phuket Sports Association. The aim of the club is to introduce youth & adults to the sport and sailing and encourage others to participate in sailing, club racing and other water activities. The club's community contributions also provide opportunities for local and underprivileged children to learn sailing and racing, with many of theses children in our racing team.
