|PIMEX is the show of choice for regional launches|
The 12th Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) presented by Thailand Elite was opened at a ceremony presided over by the Governor of Phuket Province, Mr. Nisit Jansomwong. Showcasing Phuket's marine and leisure credentials to the world, PIMEX was held during Phuket's peak tourism season from 8th to 11th January, at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina.
Organizers welcomed a strong visitor turnout from Thailand and overseas, in particular Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Russia. "The line-up of exhibitors at this year's PIMEX, both in-the-water and onshore, is one of the best yet, a strong sign of the strength of Thailand's marine and lifestyle industry. Yachting and lifestyle brands from around the world are displaying here in Phuket at PIMEX, underscoring PIMEX's position as the consumer boat show in the region and Phuket as the marine playground for Asia," said Mr. Andy Dowden, PIMEX Show Director.
This year saw one of the largest boat displays at PIMEX ever. From the smallest at less than 20 feet and priced under 2,000,000 baht, the 51 boats grow in size and price with seventeen over 20 metres in length including large motor yachts from Sunseeker, Princess, Monte Carlo and Sanlorenzo. The largest boat on display this year was a Custom Line NEXT 112 superyacht valued at approximately 430,000,000 baht, which formed part of a four-boat display by Lee Marine.
Two iconic British yacht brands, Sunseeker and Princess Yachts, were present. Sunseeker, popularly known for being James Bond's yacht of choice, had four large powerboats on display including the stunning Predator 92.
Elsewhere in the marina were boats on display from Cranchi, Majesty, Gulf Craft, Azimut, Bavaria, Moody and Wider Yachts Asia. Derani Yachts expanded to a new location at the end of Docks C and D and was showing a number of boats, the largest being a San Lorenzo 72, while Simpson Marine had a large display with six boats including a selection from the Monte Carlo shipyard, a brand which they launched into Asia with much success at PIMEX 2014.
Ideally suited to cruising the Andaman region, multihulls are growing in popularity and this was reflected with an increase in their numbers on display this year. Multihull Solutions showcased popular designs from Fountaine Pajot and Privilege while Northrop & Johnson's display includes the new Thai-built solar power-assisted luxury catamaran Heliotrope 65.
Onshore, the exhibitor line-up mirrored that of the in-water display both in terms of size and quality, and also in variety. Luxury auto brands Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Aston Martin, BMW and Mini were all debuting at PIMEX, and were joined by a collection of luxury real estate, marine and lifestyle products and services.
"The show continues to develop and I am happy to say it looks great again this year. We've improved the design and layout of the show for both exhibitors and visitors and our marketing has stretched all around the world," added Dowden. "We are seeing more boats, luxury brands and products choosing PIMEX as the platform to launch into Thailand and Asia. This year we have boats from Sanlorenzo, Wider Yachts, Princess Yachts, Gulf Craft, Monte Carlo and Custom Line all making their debut in Thailand, and for some, Asia."
According to The Wealth Report 2014, the number of ultra-high net worth individuals in Thailand grew by 147 percent between 2003 and 2013, and is expected to grow another 52 percent by 2023, offering a promising outlook for the country's yacht market. On the back of this, Gulf Craft – one of the world's leading superyachtbuilding shipyards –launched their Oryx 42 into Thailand and their Gulf Craft Majesty 48 into Asia at the Phuket International Boat Show.
"PIMEX is one of Asia's premier boat shows, both in terms of how well it is produced and how well it succeeds in attracting top calibre attendees," said Mr. Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft. "For Gulf Craft, our participation in the event is pivotal to bringing our line-up of luxury vessels to the forefront of Thailand's increasingly affluent boating community, and to being an active participant in Asia's thriving maritime industry."
Debuting at PIMEX this year was the Ferretti Custom Line brand of yachts. Part of the Ferretti Group, the Ferretti Custom Line NEXT 112 was the largest boat in the show and was part of a four-boat display by Thailand dealer Lee Marine, who having exhibited at PIMEX every year since the show's beginning 12 years ago, appreciates the value of the show as a regional marketing platform.
The first solar-assisted luxury catamaran, Heliotrope 65, also debuted at PIMEX as did the made-to-measure Sanlorenzo brand who was present with the Sanlorenzo 72 presented by their Thailand dealer Derani Yachts.
Princess Yachts, represented by Boat Lagoon Yachting, had an impressive line-up of seven motor yachts ranging from the 43 to the 88-foot flybridge motor yachts in the show. The group chose PIMEX as the Asian premier for the all new Princess 68 – an exciting departure from Princess-convention with a galley-aft arrangement on the main deck – it also showcased a new Princess 64 which is dedicated for the charter market. Also launching into Thailand at the show is the Princess 88, the star of the Princess Yachts lineup.
Speaking of their large presence at this year's PIMEX, Rico Stapel, Princess' Charter & Marketing Manager said: "PIMEX is a key part of our marketing strategy and we have chosen to launch a number of new models to both the Thai and Asian marketplaces here at the Show. Following a busy first day, the feedback has been very encouraging and we look forward to showcasing Princess Yachts to the large international demographic that PIMEX attracts."
In addition to their presence at the Show with Princess Yachts, Boat Lagoon Yachting have recently been appointed sole distributor for Wider Yachts in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, and the Wider 32 was presented for the first time in Asia.
Other business chose to showcase at PIMEX for the first time, and to launch their products into Thailand's luxury marketplace including Quadski – high speed amphibious vehicles that operate on land and water – Markagain – a platform from Italy for the management and resale of pre-owned luxury assets such as yachts, luxury cars, real estate and more – and Archi Studio – specialists in architectural design and building materials using advanced technology.
A record of more than 5,000 visitors – verified by an independent auditing company at the Show – made PIMEX 2015 the biggest yet. But for the organizers, numbers is only part of the story.
"We're very happy with the turnout and with over 5,000 independently verified visitors this year it is one of the busiest shows to date. However, our focus for PIMEX goes beyond the numbers. Our focus is on attracting quality visitors, the type with an interest in the offerings at the Show and those who have purchasing power," said Mr. Andy Dowden, PIMEX Show Director. "Having talked to many people at the show, the feedback from exhibitors and the interest from serious buyers has been very encouraging. We expect there to be a lot of business done after the show as a result of leads made at the show."
Following record numbers of 2,000 visitors on the first day, thousands of interested buyers from within Thailand and overseas each day enjoyed the offerings onshore and in-thewater, with visitors continuing to arrive long into the evening. Confirmed sales at the show include real estate, products by Sea-Doo and Quadski, lots of interest in brokerage boats and with offers made, as well as contracts signed for new builds and luxury cars.
The boardwalk at Royal Phuket Marina was abuzz from opening to closing, and long into the nights, with a collection of pop-up bars and eateries complementing the established restaurant outlets. The marina atmosphere was accentuated by a packed in-water display of 51 boats.
PIMEX, Thailand's ultimate luxury lifestyle show, has proven to be the Asian event of choice in for successful regional launches by global brands.
Dates for the 13th Phuket International Boat Show are set: 7th to 10th January 2016 at Royal Phuket Marina.
