Pattaya - DesignThailand-based Albatross Marine Design (AMD) has won a gold award at European Product Design – an annual inter-national contest for industrial designers.

The boat presents a designers' vision of 10m water taxi for modern urban environ-ments. In cities like Bangkok, Sydney or Dubai water craft are important part of passenger transport and sightseeing attractions. The new design is based on the extensive design experience of the AMD team in the field of small passenger catamarans.

The new design is a significant departure from heavy commercial passenger boats, which require extensive maintenance and high opera-tional costs. Instead, the priority is given roomy public spaces, natural airflow, practicality, easy maintenance, all at an affordable cost. However, safety features were not compromised. The catamaran is highly maneuverable in tight areas due to the wide separation of propulsion units.

The whole concept is a high-performance light boat with a minimalistic and natural layout intended mostly for rivers and protected coastal areas. Solar panels are installed enabling elec-trical/hybrid propulsion features.

The catamaran offers transport, or city tours, for 12-20 passengers, at comfortable speeds of up to 15-20kts, all while riding in the comfortable motion of a catamaran platform. Boarding of passengers is through a side gate also suitable for wheelchair users.

The saloon area features open space, which can be fitted with seats and settees, also with a bathroom and pantry. The designers used an open layout with a hardtop roof, thereby no obstruction for airflow in hot climate, and with excellent protection from the sun. In rainy con-ditions, the saloon area is protected by roll-ups.

Founded in 2006, AMD is a leading small craft design office, with over 50 different catamaran designs in service worldwide - from oilfields of Siberia to Barrier Reef of Australia.www.amdesign.co.th
